thriving in new territory
Last year, I found myself in an industry I never imagined. It was both exciting and daunting, especially because it meant I had the opportunity to explore, learn new skills, and expand my horizons.
Switching jobs, like in this scenario, can feel like starting over. So if you ever find yourself in a new role or industry, here’s how to rock your new gig (based on my experience):
1. get your head in the game
Not only have you gone into a new space, you’ve also gone into a new chain of responsibilities.
First, you need to know the rules. To understand the game (company/industry), you have to understand your role as a player, the importance of the game, its goals, missions, values, etc. This part is pretty important because you need to understand what you’re getting into. If, like me, you’re in a role as delicate as content, where communication and education are at its core, you must know these things.
Read as much documentation as is available. Watch as many videos as you can. Listen to as many podcasts as you can. Do everything—and anything—you can to understand this new space you’ve thrown yourself into.
Next, the players. You need to learn who is who on the field, from the CEO to your teammates. Figure out who can help you when I need it, who you can learn from, and even who you might need to avoid.
2. use what you know
You need to be ready to show off your skills. One of the challenges I face in my professional life is showcasing my work. For this though, I’ve had to learn to speak about my work and its impact openly. So far, it has helped me show my capabilities and experience better, and even gave me insights to what had worked and what didn’t.
By analysing your strengths and abilities, you’ll be able to figure out where the company is lacking and how your skills can be used in your new role. Also, by analysing your weaknesses, you will be able to identify the skills you need to improve on.
This analysis helps you make a plan to transfer your skills from previous experiences to your new role. Don’t keep your knowledge and skills hidden in a corner. Prepare yourself for when you have to show how you’ve solved problems or achieved results in similar situations your new company is in.
3. make friends
Networking is an important part of your career. I never used to like knowing my coworkers outside of work, and I’m still not sure I do. However, I’ve realised that you don’t need to be friends to be friendly. Be comfortable having conversations with them.
Attend office events, join clubs, and start conversations with colleagues. Building healthy relationships with your colleagues is an important part of creating the ideal work environment for you to thrive in.
4. be a quick learner
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Ask and learn, rather than make mistakes. I’m of the strong opinion that nothing is a stupid question. If you need to gain clarity on a task you’re given, ask as many questions as you have. If you’re not sure of the answers you’ve been given, move on to the next person and ask all your questions again.
Show your interest in learning new things, and be open to new perspectives. It’s important that you embrace failure and take mistakes as learning opportunities.
5. fit in, but stand out
You should pay attention to how things are done within the team. They may be different from what you’re used to, but you might be able to improve processes, tools, and ways of working.
Be the star player. Make sure you collaborate, support, and celebrate your team’s successes with your coworkers.
6. set your goals
Define what success looks like for you in this role. Use that to create your short-term and long-term goals. I’m a sucker for planning and prioritising practices, and for a long time, this has helped me to a great extent.
Break your goals into smaller steps, work with a timeline, and keep track of your progress. As you progress, don’t forget to review your goals and adjust them accordingly.
Starting work in a new role, company, or industry is like discovering uncharted territory. It’s filled with lots of excitement, challenges, and endless possibilities. When you combine your existing skills with a willingness to learn, you’re sure to be well-equipped to navigate any new environment.
Remember, every industry leader once started as a newcomer. As long as you’re determined and strategic, you’re sure to thrive in whatever field you find yourself in.
